My partner bought be the original Fatal Frame today! About an hour in, really digging it so far.
well.. to be honest. who here thought the reviewers and some segments of the fanbase would love it? not me. i knew it would shitcanned. and quite unfairly so. so far its up there somewhere between 2 and 3. if you cannot appreciate the artistic merit and overall feel of this game you really ought to be moving on from the series. you’re bordering on some grumpy old man type shit.im not gonna polish the knob about everything in the game, but considering the somewhat flaky (lets be honest. the story of silent hill was never that fleshed out) source material it does a great job. could have been scarier, sure, but then again, we’ve been saying that shit since the first one.
This quote stuck out to me: “Melee combat feels loose, imprecise, and unwieldy, regardless of what kind of weapon you’re thrashing about.”
I would assume that melee combat in REAL LIFE would feel imprecise and unwieldy, especially if you are unaccustomed to fighting. I haven’t played it yet so I can’t make a direct comment on the game, but I have seen so many horror games get ripped for ‘bad combat’ when it’s usually just realistic. It’s true that some are clunky, but not all of them. There is no way everyone is military trained to take out enemies with precision, and to be honest if all characters played that way I’d find it ridiculous. Combat in SH is *supposed* to feel disjointed at least somewhat, to emphasize the powerlessness and disorientation the character feels. In the beginning of the series a lot of it had to do with simple graphic capabilities, but it is something that I feel helps define the series.
Let’s see, if I was trapped in an obviously twisted, paranormal, ethereal town full of creepy monsters and creepier people, I don’t think I’d be thinking clearly enough to fucking aim perfectly every time. Now, I’ll admit that SH games do tend to lag behind in combat as compared with other games like the bastard child of survival horror, the ‘scary’ action adventure games (I’m looking at you Resident Evil 4), but I get flustered when people assume that just because it isn’t as well-oiled as other games where fighting is center stage, that it’s ultimately detrimental. In SH, it’s never been about killing every monster; it’s about creating a realistic version of a completely insane place. If you only play a game for killing things, SH is not the series for you.
The fucking chainsaw fetus was TERRIFYING.
